About Murwillumbah

Murwillumbah rests in Tweed Shire, in the Tweed River located on the far north-eastern New South Wales, Australia. Murwillumbah is hilly as it lies on the south eastern foothills of the McPherson Range in the Tweed Volcano valley.

The location of Murwillumbah being a volcanic origin provides the locale rich soil which is made even more flourishing with the substantial rainfall. This is manifested in the success and prosperity of sugarcane farming and the farming of cattles in the town.

Murwillumbah is located 807 km north of Sydney via the Pacific Highway, 13 km south of the Queensland border and 130 km south of Brisbane via the Pacific Motorway and Tweed Valley Way.

History of Murwillumbah

It is believed that the name Murwillumbah meant either "a good place for camping beside the river" or "a good place to catch possums". This Bundjalung word was adopted by Joshua Bray, an early selector in the valley.

Just as other towns in the Tweed River, Murwillumbah was firstly occupied by the Bundjalung Aborigines and later on immersed by Europeans. John Oxley is the first European explorer and surveyor in the area.

Murwillumbah was officially declared a municipality in 1902.
