History of Cudgen

The name Cudgen was an Aboriginal word which means, “red soil”. It is for the reason that this town is rich in volcanic plateau situated in Tweed River Valley between Murwillumbah and Tweed Heads.

Cudgen was formerly occupied by the Coodjingburra Tribe as well as the Minjagbah people.

In the late 1860s, the first Cudgen Farmers started to grow sugarcane and eventually produced sugar. The idea was brought by Michael Guilfoyle a noted botanist one of the enlist sealers in the Tweed.

After the many events that happened in this small town, it was then in 1881 when an Anglican church was established. In 1886, this was followed by the district’s first school in Cudgen village.
